We all hate making mistakes, but we make them sometimes. While some of these mistakes are minor, some may be life-changing ones. For those mistakes in particular, the sense of dread, knowing you have committed a huge mistake, can be deeply upsetting and you may feel very ashamed, guilty and annoyed with yourself, to the point that you feel, ‘I don’t want to live anymore! I want to kill myself!’
If this is how you are feeling, the best advice for you is to focus on how you can stop having such thoughts. No matter how big the mistake is, it doesn’t warrant you taking your own life. Try to gain a sense of perspective and see the big picture. Rather than being immersed in these emotions, the best thing you can do after you have committed a mistake is to do something about it:
After identifying that you have committed a mistake, use the spiritual tool of repeatedly asking for forgiveness, called pratikraman. This is a three-step process of reversal from the hurt that you have caused either through your mind, speech, or actions towards a living being.
This method is simple, yet very effective:
It is not easy to say ‘I am sorry’, but asking for forgiveness from the people you have hurt will provide them and you with a sense of peace. Over time, after repeatedly asking for forgiveness, you will experience lightness and freedom from the guilt, worry and tension that had taken over you. This method of asking for forgiveness is a deep scientific process and produces results! Performing this three-part process of pratikraman is important and you can do it internally without saying a word to the person you have hurt; you just have to remember the Lord within them and ask for forgiveness.
